Nubia Suarez is the founder and owner of Utopia Salon and Day Spa. Her journey to the success that she has found as a hairdresser goes much deeper than being a curly girl teacher, bayalage expert, and all around beauty guru. She has come to find happiness through struggles and wants to help and empower women to find their voice.

When Nubia started as a hair dresser, she had alopecia, a type of hair loss that occurs when your immune system mistakenly starts to attack hair follicles. Nubia shares her story and says she felt like, How am I going to be a hairdresser if I don’t have any hair?

But this is just one of the many things that have made her the positive and loving person that she is. When discussing curly girls with Nubia, her face lights up! She says, To me, there is nothing more beautiful than a curly girl with her natural hair! And although she does not have curly hair herself, she knows a whole lot about them. This passion for natural hair has led Nubia to be a teacher for two curly girl brands Ouidad and Deva Curl. She is so passionate about curls, that she even stops women with beautiful curls on the street to take their picture!

Along with her experience comes a big heart ready to give back to women in need. Nubia is currently working on several projects to empower women who need help getting back on their feet. She understands the financial struggles and pressures that come with being a woman and raising children in our world today. The first of these events is Fresh Start Beauty Day, a day of pampering and fun that includes a haircut, manicure, and make up touch ups. For this event 100% of the proceeds will be going to the Cranford Family Care Association. She is working with local businesses, including Bombshell Hairdressing, to provide services and raise funds for organizations in need.

INTERVIEW WITH A RISING STAR by Ana Martinez-Feliciano

When our Creative Director, Nubia, worked her magic on model Tytiana Irizzary, her modeling agent LOVED her curls because it made her stand out and look unique! Here is what the young beauty told us about her hair.

How long have you been modeling?
I have been modeling for 6 years now, ever since the age of 12.

What is your hair care routine?
I wash my hair every two weeks. Most of the time I keep the leave in conditioner in overnight to try and define my curls better.

What did you love about how Nubia styled your curls?
I loved that Nubia helped me embrace my curly hair. Before I was all about using heat which eventually damaged my curl pattern. When Nubia styled my hair it made me realize how much I needed to stay away from the hot iron and love my curls!

What advice would you give to girls trying to embrace their curls?
The advice I would give to girls trying to embrace their curls is you were born with curly hair, and not many are so make sure you show off your curls. A lot of people use heat tools just to get curls in their hair. Curly hair is a wonderful thing and is the new look. Put away the flat irons and say goodbye to straight hair, because it’s all about the curls!

Our hope is that all beauties embrace their curls like Tytiana!

FRESH START BEAUTY DAY

It was a day filled with beauty and charity at the first ever Fresh Start Beauty Day at Utopia Salon and Day Spa! In collaboration with Bombshell Hairdressing and Lifestyle site Ohmpretty.com guests received a haircut/style, manicure, and make up! All the proceeds, which totaled over $600, went to the Cranford Family Care Association!

While guests waited for their next pampering session, they munched on food and drinks, had some fun with photo booth props, and relaxed alongside the comfortable ambiance with friends. There was a lot of laughter and smiles, all for a good cause!

Mimosas were served throughout the salon in customized glasses that guests got to take home, sponsored by the event planning company EH Social Events. Complimentary bags were filled with products by Deva Curl, R+Co. Park Ave. Blow Out Balm, Kale Chips by New York Naturals, and some positive messages provided by Project Goodness. And last, but not least, we raffled off a beautiful handbag courtesy of the charity Handbags of Hope!

The day ended with beauty tips and a curly conversation by Utopia Salon and Day Spa Creative Director Nubia. We listened as the director explained how textured and curly hair deserves special attention. She went on to tell the group of ladies how to blow dry curls, what products to avoid, and the tools that are most helpful. Nubia gave us a sneak peak of what her upcoming Curly Girl Workshops are going to be like (stay tuned for more information).

All in all, it was a fun day that raised money to help empower women and families while making our guests feel beautiful!
We hope to see you at our next event!
